The Karakoram Highway Experience
Tour Overview
Undertake one of the world’s most legendary road journeys — the Karakoram Highway Experience — a grand expedition through some of the most awe-inspiring mountain landscapes on Earth. Famously known as the KKH, this remarkable engineering feat stretches over 806 kilometers within Pakistan, connecting Abbottabad to the Khunjerab Pass, the world’s highest paved international border at 4,733 meters. Winding along the ancient Silk Route, the highway traverses the towering Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindukush mountain ranges, offering a seamless blend of scenic splendor, cultural encounters, and living history.
The journey begins in Islamabad, Pakistan’s tranquil and modern capital, before heading north through Abbottabad and along the Indus River to Chilas. En route, catch glimpses of Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest peak, and witness the remarkable Junction Point, where three colossal mountain ranges meet and the Gilgit River merges with the Indus — a dramatic and unforgettable natural spectacle.
Travel onward to Gilgit, the cultural capital of Gilgit-Baltistan, where diverse ethnic communities speak languages such as Shina, Burushaski, and Wakhi. The adventure continues through the captivating valleys of Hunza and Nagar, where majestic snow-covered peaks like Rakaposhi, Diran, Ultar Sar, and Shishper loom overhead. Wander through bustling local bazaars, visit centuries-old Baltit and Altit Forts, and engage with the warm and hospitable Hunzukutz people.
Enjoy sunrise from Duikar, marvel at the turquoise waters of Attabad Lake, and take in the dramatic landscapes of Passu with its striking Cathedral Peaks. A full-day excursion to Khunjerab Pass offers a rare opportunity to reach the edge of China at extreme altitude, surrounded by alpine vistas and the possibility of spotting Himalayan wildlife.
On the return, explore the lush beauty of Naltar Valley, known for its pine forests and glacial lakes, before driving south through the Indus Valley to Taxila, a UNESCO World Heritage site rich with Buddhist archaeological treasures. Your journey concludes in Islamabad, where ancient traditions meet modern life. The Karakoram Highway Experience is best to undertake between April and November and offers international travelers a rare window into the natural beauty, cultural diversity, and historical depth of Pakistan’s northern highlands.
